Twilight Path

Twilight Path

Twilight PathWe walk
a winding path, paved,
your nails clicking from

an indoor winter. No pulling
on the lead. Three summers
ago, before your twilight,

squirrels froze
in your presence, dashing
for the nearest tree

when you pulled my arm
nearly out of the socket.
It was to be expected.

No expectations now, aside
from hourly bladder checks,
most time spent sleeping,

memories of paths winding
through your dreams,
squirrels at every turn.
